Passing the P&C exam is a huge milestone. But a lot of new licensees freeze up because they're not sure what comes next. Here's your clear roadmap.
STEP 1: APPLY FOR YOUR STATE LICENSE
Passing the exam and having a license are two different things. You need to submit a license application to your state's Department of Insurance (DOI). This usually involves a background check, a fee, and some basic paperwork. Most states process applications within 1-2 weeks.
STEP 2: GET APPOINTED BY A CARRIER OR JOIN AN AGENCY
Without a carrier appointment or an agency affiliation, you cannot legally sell insurance. You have two options: join an established agency that will appoint you through their carrier relationships, or go independent and get appointed directly by carriers.
STEP 3: COMPLETE YOUR STATE'S CE REQUIREMENTS
In most states, you need to complete continuing education (CE) credits to renew your license every 2 years. Start tracking these from day one. P&CP Academy offers CE courses to keep you compliant.
STEP 4: BUILD YOUR BOOK OF BUSINESS
This is where the real work begins. Start with your warm market, get on LinkedIn, and leverage platforms like P&C P Connect (pandcpconnect.com) to network with other professionals, get referrals, and find your niche.
STEP 5: NEVER STOP LEARNING
The insurance industry changes constantly — new products, new regulations, new market conditions. The agents who thrive long-term are the ones who treat education as a career-long commitment, not just a licensing requirement.
Congratulations on passing. Now go build something great.
P&CP Academy and P&C P Connect are here to support you at every stage of your insurance career.
